St. Vincent and the Grenadines hosted its first ever UN Security Council meeting when it hosted representatives of the council for a retreat on the UN’s Security Council Informal Working Group on Documentation and other Procedural Matters.

 
Speaking at a welcome reception on Friday January 17th for the delegates Minister of Finance and Economic Planning the Hon. Camillo Gonsalves, expressed pride in St. Vincent and the Grenadines becoming the smallest country ever to be elected to the UN Security Council as a non-permanent member.  Minister Gonsalves revealed that this move was ten years in the making and added that “it is an awesome responsibility to be working on documents and working methods at the Security Council.”

The Finance Minister said that for “a country such as St. Vincent and the Grenadines the access to, transparency and accountability of the Security Council are of crucial importance.”  Gonsalves added that this highlights the importance of the interaction among members now and in the future.

Describing this country’s inclusion on the Council as “Revolutionary” Minister Gonsalves noted that the strength and size of ideas and contributions you can make to global peace are crucial.

Kuwaits Ambassdor, H. E. Mansour Alotaibi, extended his appreciation for the hospitality received while in St. Vincent and the Grenadines and commended this country so far on doing a good job, adding that he was encouraged by the opening sessions.

There was a symbolic exchange of gifts between both countries.
